Why Aren't There Many Black CEOs?

This week I read  "Why Are There Still So Few Black CEOs?" by Te-Ping Chen from the Wall Street Journal, written in September 28. The article explores America's top 500 companies and tries to make sense of why only 1% of the CEOs of those companies (that's only 4 ) are black. Throughout all American companies with 100+ employees, only 3% of executive or senior roles are held by Black people.      The author interviews many people, one of which is the former CEO of Aetna, a black man named Ron Williams, who says that opportunity is not equally distributed and that causes black people to not have a chance to work their way up to an executive or senior position.  The author also includes results of a study by the Stanford Graduate School of Business, which found that Black executives hold only 3% of the profit-and-loss positions that are key to company success. Adding a study as well as multiple interviews gives the article more credibility an...

Boeing's 'culture of concealment' to blame for 737 crashes

Because I've been trying to generally stay away from COVID-19 and intense politics in my blog posts, I read an article by BBC titled Boeings 'culture of concealment' to blame for 737 crashes  written on September 16, 2020. The article brings to light the controversy over the Boeing 737 Max and the news that has developed around the issue.  Two fatal crashes Indonesia and Ethiopia are said to have been due to Boeing and the FAA's concealment of data and close relationship. Boeing's close relationship with the FAA allowed the 737 Max to gain safety certification easier.  BBC is generally a neutral news source that doesn't lean one way or another. This article follows that pattern by backing up everything with interviews, reports, and data. I think the article does a very good job of demonstrating the issue using reports from a congressional investigation and also brings emotion into it by interviewing families of those who have died in Boeing 737 Max crashes.  The...

Biden-Harris Campaign Uses Video Games as a Means of Organizing Voters

Today I found an article on Twitter that really peaked my interested. The article, Biden Campaign Launches Official Animal Crossing: New Horizons Yard Signs , was written today on September 1st by Makena Kelly for The Verge and describes how the Biden-Harris campaign has expanded their efforts to meet voters online.      Kelly seems to have written this article to highlight the ways that the Biden-Harris campaign is having to get creative this election year. The article mentions other events that have happened virtually, like the Democratic and Republican National Conventions and even concerts and festivals.      To me, this article introduces something that is a relatively new idea to our nation- the participation of politics in video gaming. Because online gaming is a very common hobby and has spiked especially during the pandemic, the thought of politics taking up a role in video games doesn't seem too crazy. However, it's strange to ...

"Billy Porter singing 'For What It's Worth' is the must-see moment from the DNC"

I read an article from USA Today For the Win about Emmy award winning actor Billy Porter's performance at the Democratic National Convention. The article was written by Hemal Jhaveri, an editor and writer for For the Win, on August 18. The article describes the style of Porter's performance and how it was designed to draw the viewer in and hold attention.      With my thesis being on fashion, I know the controversies of fashion all too well, which is exactly why I picked this article. As soon as  Jhaveri focuses on Porter's outfit. Porter wore a floor length black vest with tails that, in my opinion, looked absolutely fabulous. Porter is no stranger to the style of camp, which Jhaveri defines as "an aesthetic that embraces stylization, using artifice and exaggeration to make the viewer question their own values and tastes."      In her last paragraph, Jhaveri states that: Regardless of your political leanings —whether you’re a Repub...
